The Mercedes-Benz 280SEL W116 was the long wheelbase version of Mercede’s flagship luxury saloon.

The series was manufactured between 1972 and 1980 and were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called "S-Class" - for Sonderklasse or "Special Class." These S Class vehicles were always at the forefront of vehicle technology – the W116 was the first car in the world to be fitted with four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

The cars were powered by a 2.8 litre DOHC straight-6 engine that was Bosch fuel injected and coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. They handled exceptionally well thanks to Mercedes-Benz "anti-dive" suspension technology.

In 1974, the W116 was selected as European Car of the Year. The 1980 model was the last of the series.

THE CAR

This fantastic 1980 Australian delivered 280SEL is finished in beautiful metallic Silver Blue with matching hubcaps. This car has travelled only 228,850 kms over 43 years. This long wheelbase vehicle is in very good condition for its age.

On our test drive the engine displayed good power at revs, responsive steering, excellent handling and good brakes. The air conditioning system is ice cold.

Inside the interior presents very well with the stone-coloured MB-Tex interior in excellent condition. The front seats have tailor-made lambswool seat covers and there are lambswool over rugs in the rear footwells that add warmth and a feeling of luxury.

The carpets, dash and wood grain are all in excellent condition. All chrome and stainless steel presents very well.

This car is currently owned by a fastidious collector who takes pride in his vehicles. Recent expenditure totaling around $10,000 includes includes new tyres, new front wheel bearings, new transmission cooler lines, new front shock absorbers, new belts, front brake discs, muffler, tie rod ends, wishbone bushes, overhaul of the power steering pump, steering column repairs and a tune and service.

This vehicle is highly original condition including a working Becker Mexico radio with front/rear fader toggle switch.
