THE STORY

The Mercedes-Benz S Class – “S” standing for Sonderklasse “Special Class” – is the designation for top-of-the-line flagship vehicles produced by the marque.

W126 was the company's internal designation for its second generation S-Class sedans and saloons manufactured between 1979 and 1991.

The design team, led by Mercedes-Benz's chief designer Bruno Sacco, designed a more aerodynamic shape whilst retaining typical S-Class design elements. Aerodynamic drag was reduced through lengthy wind tunnel testing, reshaping the front end and bumper and hiding the wipers underneath the hood/bonnet for smoother flow.

Total weight was reduced with the extensive use of high-strength low-alloy sheet and polyurethane deformable material for bumpers and side claddings.

Power came from a variety of engines and the 300SE had an inline 6 cylinder engine with 2 valves per cylinder, coupled to a 4 speed automatic transmission.

Being the top shelf model, Mercedes-Benz equipped each S Class with the best technology of the day and often debuted new advances in each model.

These cars have often ranked as the world’s best-selling luxury sedans.
