The Volkswagen Golf Mk4 was the fourth generation of the VW Golf and the successor to the VW Golf Mk3. It launched in October of 1997 for the 1998 model year and was the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

This generation was designed with the intent of taking the VW Golf series further upmarket and included a high-quality interior and higher equipment levels and options. It brought with it the ‘Haldex 4-Wheel Drive’ system, which was previously only available on Audi products, and featured a completely revised rear axle and floor pan. It was also one of the first Golfs to come with optional Xenon headlamps and rain-sensing wipers.

In 2002 Volkswagen produced the Golf R32 in Europe. It was the world’s first production car with a dual-clutch gearbox. Thanks to its popularity, Volkswagen decided to sell the car in the United States and Australia for the 2004 model year.

The R32 version of the Golf came with a slew of features, including the ‘Haldex Traction-based 4motion’ on-demand four-wheel drive system, a six-speed manual transmission and large 334mm (13.1”) disc brakes with gloss blue painted calipers. On the outside the R32 also sported R32-specific bumpers and side-skirts, a hatch spoiler and 18” ‘OZ Aristo’ alloy wheels.

For Australia only two hundred ‘Edition 200’ cars were produced – each of them came in one of three paint colours: Black Magic Pearl, Deep Blue Pearl and Reflex Silver.

THE CAR

Number 36 of the original 200 delivered new to Australia, this 2004 Volkswagen Golf R32 is finished in ‘Black Magic Pearl’ with a complimenting Black leather trim.

A two-owner car with only 111,463 kms on the clock, she is in excellent condition and comes with provenance paperwork, a full service history, the original service books and a spare key.

Recent work on the vehicle includes some paintwork, minor renewal to some sections of the interior, new window tint and extensive suspension work in 2020 totaling $5,000 at Procar Prestige Service Centre in St Kilda in Victoria.

The interior is well-kept and incredibly clean and the car is equipped with ‘Climatronic’ automatic climate control, sport seats from ‘Konig’ with ‘R logo’ embroidery, an AM/FM radio and a 6-disc CD changer.

She is sporting a 3.2L (194ci) DOHC 24v VR6 engine which puts out tons of power. The six-speed manual transmission is smooth and the car handles beautifully.  The exhaust note gives you as sense of the sporty performance you can expect.
