In 1997 Jaguar dispensed with its 6-cylinder engine and introduced an all new V8, the AJ-V8. The newly developed 4.0-liter V8 supercharged engine produced more power than the XJS V12 with 276kW (370HP) and performance of 0-100 kmph in 5.6 seconds. Top speed was 249 kmph.

The gearbox used was the 5G-Tronic carried-over from Mercedes-Benz, each car had 4-wheel disc brakes, sports suspension and traction control. The result was a surprisingly fast luxury sedan.

Outside styling changes over the previous model included a silver mesh-grille instead of the body-coloured one, a specific set of light-alloy wheels and a dual exhaust with each pipe on one side of the vehicle in the back. The car was also sleeker than the previous model with a low roof line.

Inside, it was the same British luxury atmosphere garnished with leather, wood and other fine materials. The J-shaped gear-selector was typical for Jaguar only.

THE CAR

This 1998 Jaguar XJR (X308) is finished in beautiful Carnival Red and powered by the impressive supercharged 4.0 L V8.

Standard features are extensive and include remote control central locking, cruise control, leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and memory setting, air conditioning with climate control, Anti-Lock braking, side and dual front airbags, alarm system with remote anti-theft, 6 stacker CD player, power mirrors and power windows, front fog lights, power and heated front seats with electric memory, trip computer, and sound system with 8 speakers.

Performance is enhanced by Jaguar sports suspension with traction control and independent rear suspension.

The car sits on special 18-inch alloy wheels that are clad in brand new tyres.

Inside the cockpit the driver is surrounded by luxurious cream Connolly leather and  extensive walnut trim. The front seats have heavy patina and there is a tear in tear in the driver's seat. Apart form this, this car is in excellent condition.

These cars were over $175,000 when new.

This is an extremely fast and impressive luxury sedan.
