THE STORY
Introduced in 1997, the Pajero Evolution was built as a homologation special to meet regulations for the Dakar Rally T2 group specifications (Cross-Country Series Production Vehicles). It went on to dominate the competition and from 1997 – 2007 it won nine events. To this day Mitsubishi is the most successful manufacturer to compete in this Dakar class.
The Evo came equipped with a bespoke, naturally aspirated 3.5-litre 24 valve DOHC V6 which produced 206kW of power and 348Nm of torque. These cars had a top speed of 209 kmph and 0-100kph time of 8.5 seconds. Impressive for a 4x4 designed for off road use.
Their short wheel-base made them nimble and fast across the Sahara sand dunes.
These Pajero coupes were fitted out with Recaro seats, a special wide body kit, bespoke hood scoop and upgraded suspension and Torsen differentials. They also had front double wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, skid plates and mud flaps.
There were only 2,500 road-going units produced over the span of only two years.
THE CAR
This is a fantastic example of a super unusual, very rare performance 4x4.
A Japanese import, she is finished in sparking white duco and has been treated to new Evolution decals.
The engine has fantastic torque and the car is fast with strong acceleration. Gear changes are smooth and effortless.
All original features are retained including Recaro seats, bonnet scoop, front corner mirror, mud flaps, body kit and wheels. The car is complete with a Japanese sat-nav screen and winch. The tyres are in excellent condition.
An appreciating cult car with Dakar Rally pedigree.
