The Shah of Iran prompted Mercedes-Benz to build a military vehicle to take on the Land Rover, Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep. The resulting “Gelandewagen” or “G-Wagon” was designed in military, professional and civilian guises and the W460 generation debuted in 1979 with a live-axle 4x4 and three engine variants.

In 1980, the flagship 300GD model was released, powered by a 3.0 litre inline-five cylinder diesel engine and in various body styles including cabriolet, wagon and panel van.

Transmissions were either a 4 or 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic and the cars had 3 locking differentials – they were rugged and capable of going almost anywhere.

In 1985 central locking, differential locks and a tachometer became standard. The model has been continuously produced for over 44 years – second only to the Unimog.

THE CAR

This is a very rare 5-speed manual cabriolet version of the W460 G Wagon.

Originally delivered to the UK, this car was exported to Australia approximately 6 years ago.

This stunning 4 x 4 example is finished in factory Carmine Red and has been treated to a full restoration over 4 years that cost in excess of $ 100,000.

The car’s presence is wonderful and the gorgeous red paint is offset by satin black wheel arch extensions, black bumpers and front grille.

Work undertaken during the restoration included new paint, new black soft top with zippers and a stunning new black and grey chequered cloth interior with vinyl trim.

In addition, factory specification air conditioning and a 90-litre long range fuel tank were also installed.

The car’s brakes were overhauled as was the exhaust and electrical system. New Bilstein rear shock absorbers have been installed and a major engine service was undertaken.

The 3.0 litre inline diesel engine has plenty or torque and enjoys the revs. The 5-speed manual gearbox is easy to shift.

The cabriolet body allows for all weather exploring – top up or down.

These go-anywhere W460 generation 4x4s are rare and the quality of this car is second to none.
