1984 911

THE STORY

Produced in Germany between 1964 and 1989, the Porsche 911 was originally developed as a much more powerful, larger and more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356. The car made its debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Initially, Porsche designated the car as the “901”, however Peugeot had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a ‘0’ in the middle in France so Porsche changed the name to ‘911’ for all markets.

The 1984 Porsche saw the re-release of the iconic “Carrera” name and the introduction of a new 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder engine that had Bosch Motronic fuel injection and enhanced reliability. Putting out 207 HP, this car represented the pinnacle of the classic air-cooled 911 G-Series before major design shifts.

The 1984 model is renowned for its impressive speed and handling characteristics. Accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately 5.4 seconds the car also had larger disc brakes all round to help with heat dissipation.

In 1984, Porsche introduced the M491 option - commonly known as the "Turbo-Look". Cars fitted with this had an aggressive stance and resembled the 930 Turbo with wide wheel arches, a distinctive "Whale Tail" rear end, larger wheels, stiffer suspension and better brakes. Available only between 1984 and 1989, this option became highly desirable and rare.

Only 6,532 Coupe vehicles were built in 1984.

THE CAR

This 1984 Porsche 911 Coupe is fitted with the M491 option including the wider wheel arches, “Whale Tail” and iconic forged aluminium black five-spoke Fuchs wheels. It is unknown whether this was fitted at the factory or after delivery.

Originally sold to the USA, it was then exported to Japan where an extremely high quality right-hand drive conversion was undertaken. Imported to Australia from Japan some time ago, the current owner has had the car for the last 4 years and previous to this it was also a South Australian owned vehicle.

Equipped with a 3.2 litre naturally aspirated flat-6 engine, this car roars into life when started and has plenty of power. Power is put to the road by the car’s original 5-speed gearbox. Its feels extremely solid on the road for its age – a testament to Porsche’s build quality after 40+ years.

Work done includes a new clutch by Mark Buick, valve cover gaskets, belt service and the engine has a performance cam.

At some point in the past this car has been re-sprayed in Shark Blue that stands out from the crowd and reflects the car’s fun feel. The paint is driver quality with blemishes present and this is reflected in the asking price.

Inside the dark blue leather interior is in good condition for its age as are the door cards headlining and dash. The original rear carpets are good and the front could benefit from a set of new Porsche floor mats.

Other features include a working sunroof, power windows, climate control (air conditioning not working), power seats and an aftermarket JVC stereo head unit.

Currently on historic registration in SA, no books or records come with the car other than the past 4 years of ownership.
