THE STORY
1971 heralded the last restyling of the first generation Mustang. The car grew in size, gaining 3 inches in width in order to accommodate Ford’s big block 429ci (7.0 litre) engine without the need to rework the car’s suspension.
These cars had long, broad hoods, truncated rear ends and thick-waisted styling which blended classic Mustang elements with Italian GT cues.
The car’s weight increased due to tightening safety regulations and Ford's marketing efforts concentrated on new styling and features such as hidden windshield wipers, colour keyed racing mirrors and strategically placed appliques designed to accent the new design.
There were 4 engine options including the 351ci (5.8 litre) "Cleveland" V-8, which had a 9.0 to 1.0 compression ratio and 4.0 x 3.50-inch bore and stroke, 240hp at 4,600 RPM and 350-lbs.ft. of torque at 2,600 RPM.
The 1971 convertible would be the last year that Ford would produce a Mustang with a soft top for over a decade. All convertibles were equipped with a power top and a glass rear window.
Of the 149,678 Mustangs produced in 1971, only 6,121 (or 4%) were convertibles.
THE CAR
Imported into Australia over 10 years ago by its current owner, this is believed to be an original miles car.
Powered by its original Cleveland 351ci engine, this car is powerful and its smooth automatic transmission and sorted suspension make it a delight to drive.
This Mustang looks tough with its optional “Ram Air hood package” with two NASA type hood scoops, twist style bonnet looks and “Tu-Tone” paint treatment.
Other features include Magnum 500 wheels (including the spare) with brand new BF Goodrich tyres, a white convertible power top with original rear glass window, power front disc brakes and power steering.
The original two-tone blue knitted vinyl interior is comfortable, there is a blue “boot” to cover the convertible top when in the down position the car has air conditioning (needs re-gassing).
An extremely affordable V8 convertible Mustang that looks the part and will only increase in value as these early 70’s Mustangs continue to appreciate in the US.
