1970 MUSTANG MACH 1 "M" CODE

SOLD

THE STORY

Introduced in 1969, the “Mach 1” was a performance-oriented option package for the wildly successful Ford Mustang. It was an instant success as the horsepower wars escalated even further.

The Mach 1 was only available for the “Sports roof” body style (previously known as the “Fastback”) and included matte black hood treatment, hood scoop, competition suspension, chrome pop-open gas cap, deluxe interior and optional chin spoiler, rear deck spoiler and rear window louvres.

Buyers had a choice of seven engine options ranging from the sweet 351 ci V8 up to the thumping 428 ci V8. Multiple colour, interior, axel, transmission and other options meant that buyers could literally customise their own vehicles.

The 1970 Mach 1 sported the new Cleveland V8 engines which were heavyweight small-block engines designed to act like big blocks.

Style-wise, the 1970 model had dual beam headlights with recessed sports lamps, revised bucket seats, side striping and a new honeycomb rear panel that added depth.

THE CAR

Finished in beautiful Calypso Coral paint (re-sprayed in 2004), this car was imported into Australia by the current owner in 2011. Believed to be a 4-owner car, this Mach 1 was sourced from a private collector in California.

Fitted with a “square cast” 351 ci Ford Boss V8 with 4-barrel carburettor, the engine is strong and has a 4-bolt main bottom end. An MSD ignition system has been added to improve reliability of spark and running.

A correct “M” code car, it retains most of its original features including black Mach 1 knitted vinyl interior, power steering, factory air conditioning, FMX automatic gearbox, rear window louvre and spoiler.

A genuine, fully functioning shaker hood has been fitted at some point after market. The air conditioning system was overhauled in Australia but currently needs to be re-gassed.

Fitted with a full stainless steel exhaust system, the car has a wonderful V8 note and sits on Magnum 500 wheels with black Mustang centre caps.

Work undertaken by the current owner includes front and rear Kelsey Hayes brakes, front shock absorbers and a rear axle oil seal.

A Marti Report verifying the authenticity of the car is included as are the 4 original steel rims and hub caps that the car left the factory with.
