THE STORY
Introduced in 1969, the “Mach 1” was a performance oriented option package for the wildly successful Ford Mustang. It was an instant success as the horsepower wars escalated even further.
The Mach 1 was only available for the “Sportsroof” body style (previously known as the “Fastback”) and included matte black hood treatment, hood scoop, competition suspension, chrome pop-open gas cap, deluxe interior and optional chin spoiler, rear deck spoiler and rear window louvres.
Buyers had a choice of seven engine options ranging from the sweet 351 ci up to the thumping 428 ci. Multiple colour, interior, axel, transmission and other options meant that buyers could literally customise their own vehicles.
The 1970 Mach 1 sported the new Cleveland V8 engines which were heavyweight small-block engines designed to act like big blocks.
Style-wise, the 1970 had dual beam headlights with recessed sports lamps, revised bucket seats, side striping and a new honeycomb rear panel that added depth.
