THE STORY

The Holden Monaro was a rear-wheel drive coupe manufactured by General Motors Holden in Australia from 1968 to 1975 and later reintroduced from 2001 to 2005.

The first generation HK Monaro was Australia’s first 100% home-grown sports car. Its styling was sleek, with an aggressive stance and pillarless windows.

There were three variants: basic Monaro coupe, Monaro “GTS” coupe and Monaro “GTS 327” coupe. The GTS versions had full instrumentation installed including a tachometer in  the centre console.

There was a choice of four engines ranging from two 6-cylinder models right through to the 307ci and 327ci V8s.

The HK Monaro was awarded Wheels Car of the Year for 1968.

A GTS 327 gave Holden its first victory in the 1968 Hardie-Ferodo 500 in the hands of Bruce McPhee and Norm Beechy achieved third place with the car in the 1969 Australian Touring Car Championship.

 

THE CAR

This is a number’s matching 1968 GTS Monaro Coupe that was assembled in Pagewood Sydney.

A wonderful colour combination - finished in stunning Ermine White (paint code 10845) with black stripes and contrasting red GTS badging. The Jacana Blude (code 14Z) seats, carpets, door cards, headlining and seat belts are all in excellent condition.

The original, correct steering wheel, dash, radio and console with GTS tachometer are all in place and in fantastic condition. The chrome, stainless steel and scuff plates are original and in excellent condition. A black venetian blind adorns the rear window.

The engine bay is well detailed and the original 307ci (5.0 litre) V8 engine has been enhanced with a mild cam, Edelbrock intake manifold and 4-barrel Holley carburettor. The original Powerglide automatic transmission is in place.

The car has its original wheels clad in new redline tyres and a twin exhaust system that sounds fantastic.

A beautiful piece of Australian motoring history.
