THE STORY
The Mercedes-Benz Fintail (“Heckflosse” in German)is the nickname given to saloon cars built by the marque between 1959 and 1968. The modest tailfins of the 220s were a cue to US-led design trend of the era.
The proper model designation was the W111 which was powered by a 2.2 litre 6-cylinder engine with twin Zenith carburettors. Available body styles were 4 door saloon, 2 door coupe and 2 door convertible formats.
These cars had a top speed of 165 kmph and were rear wheel drive with drum brakes all round.
THE CAR
This is a neat example of a stylish Mercedes-Benz “Finny”.
Finished in a light beige, the red upholstery provides a stunning contrast to the duco as do the Mercedes-Benz hubcaps and whitewall tyres.
The vehicle’s extensive chrome work is in outstanding condition as is the boot, engine bay, dash and door cards. The upholstery is in fantastic order except for the driver’s seat where some stitching has come undone.
All gauges, indicators and horn are in good working order.
Powered by its original 6-cylinder engine, coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission, this is a stately vehicle that is fun to drive.
