THE STORY
General Motors designer Harley Earl is credited with convincing GM to build a two-seat sports car for the American market.
Launched in 1953, the resulting Chevrolet Corvette quickly earned the mantle of “America’s Sports Car” and the model is still produced today.
1963 was the first year of the Corvette ‘Stingray’ and for the C2 generation of cars, which sported a new design for Corvette and boasted newfound handling prowess. Lighter than previous models in the Corvette lineup, the Stingray also featured a boost in acceleration.
For the 1963 model year 21,513 Stingrays were produced, split evenly between the convertible and coupe body types – of the convertibles, more than half were ordered with an optional ‘lift-off’ hardtop. All cars from this year were equipped with 327ci engines with a standard 250hp, however options were available for 300, 340 and 360 horsepower as well.
A ’63 Corvette Stingray was prominently featured in the hit 1990 film ‘Internal Affairs’ starring Richard Gere.
THE CAR
This number’s matching 1963 C2 Corvette Stingray Convertible is finished in Riverside Red (923) and complimented by a Red Vinyl interior (490M). This car has been professionally converted to right-hand drive (RHD) and is mechanically very well sorted.
Boasting the high output 327ci V8 engine rated at 340 horsepower, this roadster gets up and boogies. The engine bay is very clean and power is put to the road by a correct replacement Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission. This car handles and drives very, very well.
The suspension has been overhauled as required over the course of ownership and the brakes were refreshed only three years ago. The wheels with chrome hub caps, spinners and white wall tyres are in excellent condition.
There is an extensive receipt file and other documents that come with the vehicle, alongside new seat trims and foams, a new white convertible top and a spare console.
The paint is driver quality, and there are some minor cosmetic issues that can be easily fixed at minimal cost to bring this car to the next level and improve its value significantly.
A solid example of a mechanically sound beast with a excellent RHD conversion, this ’63 Stingray Convertible makes an excellent base to refurbish into a sensational car.
Currently on historic registration in SA.
