1962 250 GTE

THE STORY

Unveiled in 1960 and produced through 1963, the Ferrari 250 GTE marked a turning point for the brand. As Ferrari’s first true 2+2 grand tourer, the 250 GTE blended practicality with the performance and elegance that had already defined the 250 series.

Visually, the 250 GTE showcased clean and graceful Pininfarina styling, with long flowing lines and a balanced stance. Its refined proportions and subtle chrome accents gave it a distinctly grand-touring character. Inside, the cabin featured leather upholstery, a wooden steering wheel, and a more spacious layout than any Ferrari before it, offering comfort without diminishing the car’s sporting intent.

Under the hood lay Ferrari’s famed 3.0-litre Colombo V12 with triple Webber carburettors that produced around 240 horsepower. Paired with a 4-speed all-synchromesh manual transmission and well-tuned suspension, the GTE offered smooth and confident performance on the road.

The car’s engine lineage was shared with Ferrari’s competition cars of the era, giving the GTE genuine racing pedigree beneath its refined exterior.

Other features included glorious deep-dish Barrani wire wheels with a knock off centres, servo assisted Dunlop disc brakes, all dash instruments by Veglia Borletti and subtle crackle-black cam covers in the engine bay. The rear ash tray is embossed with the crossed flags of Ferrari and Farina.

On the road, the 250 GTE delivered a balance of speed, stability, and long-distance comfort that made it one of Ferrari’s most capable touring machines. Its presence was felt beyond civilian streets - many GTEs were repurposed by Italy’s Polizia as high-speed pursuit cars, a testament to their reliability and pace during a time when few vehicles could match such performance.

A commercial success, the 250 GTE became Ferrari’s best-selling model of the early 1960s. Its popularity helped cement Ferrari’s place in the grand tourer market and contributed to the financial stability that powered the company’s racing triumphs.

THE CAR

Designed by Pininfarina and one of only 954 cars built over three production cycles, this Australian delivered 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE is a spectacular example of Ferrari's first series production 2+2.

In addition, this car is one of only 55 right-hand-drive examples ever made.

This particular car is chassis number 3265 and was delivered by official Ferrari agents W.H. Lowe of Balwyn, Victoria, to a Melbourne clothing retailer.

Every owner since the first has been documented and the list includes some esteemed Australian names.

The car has travelled only 33,780 miles over the course of its life thus far.

Finished in gleaming Bianco (“White”), the car retains its original red leather interior save for the transmission tunnel that has been recovered at some stage. The seats are in excellent original condition with original foams and the right amount of patina for a car of this age. The door cards and dash are in fantastic condition and all gauges work.

All stainless steel, chrome, badges and wheels are in outstanding condition.

Power comes from the strong 3.0L 60 degree V-12 engine with triple Weber carburettors, and is put to the road via the original 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The car handles well in the corners and has excellent brakes.

This vehicle has a unique start-up procedure for cold weather, involving drawing out the choke and turning on an electrical petrol pump. Once the pump ceases, it is turned off and the ignition key is depressed and released as soon as the engine fires, at which point the choke is slowly pushed in.

Of the original 954 cars built, in 2017 the GTE register estimated that only 387 remain, with a maximum 111 not accounted for on the register. As stated, this gorgeous GTE is one of only 55 built in right-hand-drive, and of those it is surmised that around 28 remain based on the same percentages as the broader register.

Along with the vehicle there are two sets of keys, a large file of receipts and documents (with the earliest dating back to June 1967), an assortment of 6x4 inch glossy photos of the car's restoration, and an original copy of "Road & Track" magazine from 1963. This magazine includes a 4-page article and road test of the 1962 250 GTE.

The last service work done on the car was in 2024 which included overhauling the brake master cylinder, the front suspension and greasing and servicing the tail shaft.

The historic plates on the vehicle will not be sold with the car and will be retained by the current owner.

Exceedingly rare with a rich and fully documented ownership history, this original and exceptional 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE is in excellent condition. A true classic.
