THE STORY

In 1961 “Standard of the World” wasn’t just a slogan, it was something Cadillac lived and breathed. The company set the standard in terms of desirability, quality, prestige, engineering and styling.

Kicking off the 7th generation of Cadillac, the 1961 Cadillac model was a complete redesign of the previous years. The car had a new grill, front pillar design and a crisp, revised backlight treatment. It also had increased rigidity, more room inside and improved road noise insulation.

The sculptured rear end was dominated by the iconic Cadillac tail fins which were trimmed down from the prior year model. A new feature, “skegs”, were smaller tail fins that extended downwards below the oval tail light housings.

Powered by Cadillac’s refined 390ci V8 (325HP) with 16 overhead valves and a Rochester 4-bbl downdraft Quadrajet carburettor, power was effortless. All engines were mated to GM’s Hyrda-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission.

Cadillac employed powered finned brake drums front and rear to provide stopping power. Larger front brake cylinders were installed to provide sure, skid and fade-resistant stopping power.

Standard equipment included 6-way power seats, power steering, dual reverse lights, dual speed wipers with window washers, wheel discs and fender skirts.

THE CAR

This is a stunning Cadillac convertible finished in a deep acrylic Toledo Red with contrasting new white power convertible top.

Imported into Australia in November 2007, the current owners have continually restored this car over the 15 years they have held it.

First registered in January 2013, the work completed includes all bumpers re-chromed, most diecast pieces refinished, new brakes all round, new suspension, shock absorbers, sway bars, windscreen and weather strips.

The smooth 390ci V8 has been reconditioned as has the automatic transmission.

In addition an immaculate and outstanding red interior has been installed including carpets, door cards, seat trims and sun visors.

A rare continental kit has been installed and new exhaust system and whitewall tyres fitted. The underbody has been fully sealed and is in outstanding condition.

The rear deck paint has some issues, but other than this, the vehicle is in outstanding condition.

Total mileage over the car’s 10 year’s registration period has been only 2,500.

A full file of all receipts for work done is on hand.
