FORD

1960 THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE

SOLD

THE STORY

Customer feedback in during the mid-50s indicated that the American public loved the “Baby Birds” that were produced during 1955 -1957 but wanted a car that seated more than two people and that the whole family could enjoy. They also wanted more options and luxury. Ford executives wanted more sales.

In response, Ford developed the “Square Bird”, the second-generation Thunderbird that lasted for three years between 1958 and 1960. It was an absolute success, winning Motor Trend’s Car of The Year in its first year.

Ford succeeded in placing the T-Bird in the personal luxury car segment. Low slung, the car was big and comfortable with multiple luxury options available and muscle under the hood. The unibody construction made it lighter and roomier than its main competitors and these cars went hard.

The “Square Birds” featured a special headlight casing which mimicked the shape of an eagle eye. Big, chromed bumpers dominated the face and rear and the optional continental kit converted these cars into imposing “land yachts”.

The curved windshield and sidelines followed the current jet-age design trend and its rear quarter panels featured fins on the trunk's sides, reminiscent of winglets on an aircraft. The three round lights that comprised each taillight were part of a thruster-like body panel.

The interior easily fit four adults with four individual seats. On the dash-panel Ford installed three large dials but there was no tachometer. This car was aimed at those who wanted to cruise, not race.

Under the hood Ford offered a choice of two V8 engines which were paired to a standard 3-speed manual with a 3-speed automatic being an optional extra.

In 1960 there were 11,860 convertibles produced out of a total 92,843 units (12.8%).

THE CAR

This glorious “square bird” convertible is finished in new, original J colour code Monte Carlo red with immaculate chrome and the rare continental kit.

Power is put to the road via the smooth automatic 3 speed transmission. The original 4-wheel drum brakes remain.
