THE STORY
Produced in Coventry, England between 1955 and 1962 by the Standard-Triumph Motor Company, these beautifully designed vehicles epitomise the traditional rear wheel drive British roadster.
The first production car to include standard front disc brakes, the model was an instant sales and motorsport success and was represented in races, hill climbs, and rallies across Europe and North America, enjoying many outright, team and class victories.
Replacing the TR2, the TR3 had greater power and updated variants were popularly (but unofficially) known as the "TR3A" (1957) and "TR3B" (1962).
In 1959 a further modified version came out with raised stampings under the bonnet and boot hinges and under the door handles, as well as a redesigned rear floor section. In addition, the windscreen was attached with bolts rather than the connectors originally used.
The TR3A had a full width radiator grille, removable plexiglass side curtains, exterior door handles, lockable boot handle and came with a full tool kit as standard.
The TR3A was so successful that the original panel moulds eventually wore out and had to be replaced. Just under 58,000 were produced and it is estimated today that under 9,000 of these have survived.
Despite being over 50 years old these cars are still competitive in the E-production class of the Sports Car Club of America.
