1957 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE

THE STORY

Born from pre-war engineering and post-war necessity, by 1957 the Volkswagen Beetle had firmly established itself as a global icon of practicality and charm. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche and originally commissioned by the German government in the 1930s. By the late 1950s, it was already on its way to becoming the best-selling car of all time.

The 1957 model featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled 1.2L (1192cc) flat-four engine producing around 36 horsepower. Paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, it wasn’t built for speed, but for reliability. Its engine simplicity and unique layout made it remarkably durable and easy to maintain - a key reason it found fans in every corner of the globe.

The Beetle’s distinctive rounded silhouette, stamped steel body and torsion bar suspension offered surprising comfort and ride stability for a compact car. In an era before small cars were common, it stood out not just for its appearance, but for its friendly character and honest engineering.

By 1957, subtle updates such as a redesigned dashboard, oval rear window and improved brakes made the Beetle more refined without losing its essential charm. It was beloved by students, tradesmen and free-spirited drivers alike. Its utilitarian nature, mechanical resilience and approachable price point helped it transcend borders, languages and generations.

THE CAR

A rare, collectable oval window Beetle in outstanding condition. From long term ownership exceeding 34 years.

This beautiful Prairie-Beige 1957 Volkswagen Beetle was purchased by the current owner as a barn find in 1991. A full restoration of the vehicle commenced immediately and was completed in 2004. A second donor car was sourced for parts to keep the authenticity and originality of the vehicle intact. There is an extensive receipt file of money spent and work done during the restoration.

The 1.2 litre flat-four engine was completely rebuilt by a VW specialist and the original 4-speed manual transmission was overhauled. The car starts easily and drives very well. The car has its iconic twin tail pipes intact.

A coachbuilder repaired the bodywork professionally prior to it being dipped and repainted. All bolts and screws were replaced with stainless steel, the motor shroud was powder-coated and a new wiring loom was installed. The car’s brakes and suspension were all overhauled and a new fuel tank was installed.

On the inside, the interior has been professionally re-trimmed with new seat covers, door cards, headliner and carpet - the same material as used in Porsche vehicles. The car retains its original steering wheel, gear shift and gauges.

The car has its VW semaphores (trafficators) but they are not operating. The radio has been deleted – a new unit could easily be installed.

This vehicle has its original service records dated between 1962 and 1981. It also has its original instruction manual. There is also a quantity of Volkswagen literature and books.

Photos of the restoration go with the car as does a quantity of spare parts including guards, semaphores, a fuel gauge and taillights.

A fun, happy car that starts every time and puts a smile on your dial!
