THE STORY
General Motors designer Harley Earl is credited with convincing GM to build a two-seat sports car for the American market.
Launched in 1953, the resulting Chevrolet Corvette quickly earned the mantle of “America’s Sport’s Car” and the model is still produced today.
1957 was the fifth year of production for the V8 models and the engine displacement was increased to 283 cubic inches (4.6 litres).
For the first time mechanical fuel injection option was available – this was a major technological advancement – Jaguar, Porsche, Farrari and Lamborghini did not develop fuel injection until the 1970s or later.
In April 1957, GM introduced a 4-speed manual transmission and only 664 were equipped with this option. There was also an RPO 684 option - racing suspension – and only 51 owners ticked the box on that one.
All Corvette bodies were manufactured in fibreglass giving a fantastic power to weight ratio that enhanced spirited driving.
All 1957 Corvettes were convertibles and buyers had a choice of either a convertible top, hard top or both – it was possible to buy a convertible Corvette with hard top only!
Only 6,339 Corvettes were sold in 1957 and it is estimated that around 1,200 now remain.
