1948 CITROEN TRACTION AVANT

SOLD

THE STORY

Launched in the 1930s and continuing production through to 1957, the Citroën Traction Avant was nothing short of revolutionary. By 1948, this sleek French saloon had already cemented its place in automotive history as the world’s first mass-produced front-wheel-drive car with a unitary body construction - decades ahead of its time.

Under the hood in 1948, the Traction Avant 11 Légère was equipped with a 1.9L (1911cc) inline-four engine, producing around 56 horsepower. Though modest by today's standards, paired with front-wheel drive and independent suspension it delivered remarkable traction and ride quality. The monocoque chassis was a radical departure from the norm, offering a lighter and stiffer platform that enhanced both safety and handling.

On the road the Traction Avant earned a reputation for stability, control and confidence in all conditions. This earned it its name quite literally - with "Traction Avant" translating to "front-wheel drive." Its dynamic driving characteristics were unmatched by its contemporaries, with many hailing it as the best-handling car of its era. It was not only popular with families and businesspeople, but also famously used by the French Resistance and conversely the Gestapo in World War II.

By 1948, the car had become an icon of pre- and post-war European motoring. The 11CV models, especially the Légère, were among the most sought-after, offering a perfect balance of performance, comfort and grace.

THE CAR

A very rare right-hand-drive example built by Citroen in France – this car was delivered to the French Embassy in South Africa for diplomatic use. Built to French domestic standards, this car has a painted dash panel, cloth seats and 6v electrics.

This fantastic example of a 1948 Citroen Traction Avant 11 Legere eventually found its way to Australia via England, where it was purchased in 2017 by the current owner.

Presenting in a striking Black finish that offsets the chrome and stainless steel, this car has eye-catching steel rims painted in cream and a beautiful grey interior. This car exudes all the style and charm of the 1940s.

Under the hood, this beauty has a 1.9L inline four-cylinder engine, which was completely rebuilt approximately ten years ago. During the rebuild the engine was updated with a mid-50s Citroen DS19 cylinder head which gives the car good torque and power through the gears.

The transmission is a 3-speed manual unit with the gear shift quaintly mounted on the dash. This car handles extremely well as it was designed to do and has just been treated to 4 x brand new tyres.

Inside, the dash, carpets, seats and door cards are in excellent condition. All instruments and gauges are in working order including the clock. Aftermarket temperature and oil pressure gauges have been fitted for driver piece of mind.

Extensive information has been kept for the vehicle including invoices for work completed over the period of ownership.

A historical icon with superb handling and lovely to drive. Currently on historic registration in SA.
