Introduced in 1999 as the E53 model, the BMW X5 was the first SUV produced by BMW. At launch it featured all-wheel drive and came with either manual or automatic transmission options. It was originally marketed as a ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’ (SAV) rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

Shifting away from traditional ‘body-on-frame’ construction, the X5 utilized a ‘monocoque’ chassis instead – a structural system in which loads are supported by the objects ‘structural skin’ rather than a frame.

In 2006 BMW launched the second generation of the X5 - the E70 model. It featured key improvements, such as the inclusion of BMW’s iDrive system and an optional row of third seats for seven-passenger capacity.

An M Performance variant was released in 2009 and featured BMW’s first turbocharged M Power V8 engine capable of producing 555bhp. In addition, the M variant sported special optimized suspension that featured Adaptive Drive technology and newly developed ‘M Servotronic’ power steering for incredible handling. Other high-tech features included launch control and a six-speed ‘M Sport’ automatic transmission, with the inclusion of manually selectable gears via paddles or an electronic gear selector.
