THE STORY
Produced by Ford Australia from 1969 to 1970, the Ford Falcon XW replaced the Falcon XT model previously available and featured a comprehensive facelift, a new grille and taillights, and all new exterior panels alongside an extensively redesigned interior. When the XW was initially designed, focus was put on developing the car to appear more ‘aggressive’ and ‘macho’ than the previous XT model.
The XW was the third iteration of the second generation of Falcons, and the lineup also included the Ford Futura (XW) and the Ford Fairmont (XW) – which was the luxury-focused variant. A ‘Grand Sport’ or ‘GS’ rally package was available on selected models throughout the range. The GS package included orange rally stripes, chrome wheel covers and a ‘GS’ wood-grained steering wheel as well as full instrumentation.
THE CAR
Finished in stunning Track Red paint, this example of a Fairmont XW GS Wagon has been handsomely restored and features tasteful styling in the form of gold GS stripes, a GS dash, GS hubcaps and an impressive interior with a Dark Saddle trim.
Originally equipped with a factory six-cylinder, the engine has been replaced with a 5.0L fuel-injected V8 taken from a 1991 NA Ford Fairlane and a matching four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive has been installed as well. The engine was completely professionally rebuilt just over 12 months ago and has done approximately 100km only since.
Stopping power is provided by boosted front disc and rear drum brakes which have been fully overhauled with new shoes, pads, master cylinder, wheel cylinders and hoses.
The car is equipped with a standard Bog Warner differential, and the vehicle features extractors through to a dual two-inch exhaust - straight through to the rear. These mechanical changes have given the car great power and a nice exhaust note. The automatic transmission is economical and under the hood, the ECU sits under a stainless cover.
Externally this XW is equipped with fog lights, a period bonnet, front guard wind-deflectors, bumper over riders and a front chin spoiler. Both the headlights and fog lights are fitted with stainless mesh protectors and the car is sitting on fourteen-inch rims with white-wall tyres.
On the inside, the trim is clean and in great condition. The installed GS dash includes the original 120MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tachometer. All of the gauges and instrumentation work. A modern sound system has been installed with a remote control that is hidden behind a reproduction ‘Super Fringe’ radio. Kenwood speakers have also been installed.
The rear tailgate window is electrically controlled via a switch on the dash above the key. Period venetian blinds are fitted to the windows in the rear cabin.
A smooth ride with plenty of power and style – a great family cruiser. Previously registered in VIC and currently on historic registration in SA.
