1966 JAGUAR MARK X 4.2

$22,900

THE STORY

Holding the title as Jaguar’s top-of-the-range saloon car from 1961 to 1970, the Jaguar Mark X was a hallmark car for Jaguar as it introduced radically different styling and technology from its predecessors.

The Mark X was the first Jaguar to feature an upright and often forward-facing front fascia and grille flanked by prominent quad round headlights.

Making its debut within a year of Jaguar’s iconic E-Type sportscar, the Mark X integrated much of the E-Type’s technology, innovations and specifications. The Mark X featured monocoque construction as well as power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes and independent rear-suspension, which was unheard of for early 1960’s British luxury vehicles.

Originally fitted with a 3.8L triple-carbuettor in-line six-cylinder engine, an enlarged 4.2L variant fitted with triple ‘SU Carburretors’ became available for the London Motor Show in October of 1964.

Power-assisted steering came as standard across all Mark X’s, however the 4.2L variants received ‘Marles Varamatic Bendix (Adwest)’ variable ratio steering boxes, which were designed by an Australian, Arthur Bishop.

Of the Jaguar Mark X’s produced, the 4.2L variants are considered to be the rarest as only 5,137 were built, and it is unknown how many have survived the test of time.

A 4.2L Jaguar Mark X was famously owned and driven by Madonna.

THE CAR

Built in January of 1966 in Browns Lane, Coventry in the UK - this example of a Jaguar Mark X was Australian delivered to Adelaide SA in June of 1966. This car has had only 5 owners from new, with the current owner in possession of the vehicle for 7 years.

Finished in Opalescent Maroon which is in original (driver) condition, the car features a beige leather interior with a complimenting wood-grain trim. The inside is incredibly spacious with more than enough room to transport 5 people and their luggage in comfort.

Extensive mechanical work has been carried out on the vehicle over the years. The motor was rebuilt approximately 10 years ago. An aftermarket ‘Bell’ exhaust has been fitted and the fuel pump has been replaced. The front brakes were entirely rebuilt around 4 years ago, and the braking system and lines were also upgraded. New tyres were fitted at the same time, and 6 new shock absorbers have been fitted as well under current ownership.

The car is equipped with the desirable 4.2L six-cylinder engine fitted with triple ‘SU Carburettors’ mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Stopping power is handled by power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, and the handling is excellent thanks to the inclusion of power-assisted steering and independent rear suspension.

An opportunity to own one of Jaguar’s most renowned and rare innovations.
