THE STORY
Sold from 1949 to 1951, the Lincoln EL-Series was a full-size luxury car marketed and sold by Lincoln, the luxury car division of the Ford Motor Company. It replaced the H-Series Lincoln and was the first complete redesign of the Lincoln sedan since 1936. The EL-Series Lincoln had no divisional branding and carried only the ‘Lincoln’ nameplate.
In 1949 the first all-new postwar Lincolns had a more streamlined appearance than earlier models, reflecting ‘pontoon’ styling. Recessed headlights and a shinier front-end set it apart from the very similarly styled ‘Mercury’ vehicles of the time.
In 1950 the standard Lincoln received some visual changes, including the incorporation of a new horizontal grille, a new interior layout and new door handles. Late in the model year the engine was also upgraded to address vibration and oil consumption concerns. Three piston rings were fitted as opposed to four, and the balancing of the engine was improved. The result was a marginal increase in horsepower and a smoother-running vehicle.
At this time the cooling system was also improved, and more alloy was used in its construction to increase durability.
THE CAR
Delivered new to Iowa in the USA, this original condition left-hand drive 1950 Lincoln Sport Sedan has an incredibly low genuine 41,744 miles on the odometer.
She is finished in classic Black with acres of chrome, both in driver quality condition with touch-ups having been applied over the years. The white-wall tyres, pontoon body styling, recessive headlights and distinctive horizontal chrome grille immediately set this vehicle apart on the road.
Stepping into the interior is like being transported back to the 1950s – the car is incredibly spacious, and the back seat more resembles a large and comfortable couch than anything else. The grey cloth trim on the front bench seat is in excellent condition with the rear seat showing its age. The dash features all-original gauges and instrumentation.
The engine is a 5.5L (337ci) flathead V8 with an excellent exhaust note. She is equipped with a 4-speed Hydra-matic automatic transmission and stopping power comes from mechanical drum brakes.
Substantial work has been completed on this vehicle, including a new fuel tank and sender, a rebuilt carburettor, new exhaust manifold gaskets and rebuilt brakes.
A cool example of the ultimate in American luxury vehicles for 1950 and one of only 10,692 Lincolns built in that year.
