THE STORY
Released in April 1966 and only produced for two years, the HR Holden replaced the HD series and had a revised grille, reworked roofline, revised rear lights and changes to all exterior body panels. In addition, the cars had a wider track, upgraded front ball joint suspension and improved interior trim.
In late 1966 a safety upgrade was released with front safety belts, windscreen washers, reversing lights, padded sun visors and a shatter proof interior rearview mirror.
Body styles were plentiful including sedans, wagons, panel vans and utes.
The standard engine was the 161ci six cylinder (114HP) with the upmarket Premiers given the 186ci six (126HP). Also standard was a three speed manual gearbox with column change or a two speed “Powerglide” automatic transmission.
THE CAR
Very cool and hard to find. A great quality HR Special Station Sedan finished in sparkling metallic green paint with contrasting white roof, tailgate and front pillars. The chrome strips, wheel arch guards and fuel filler guard sparkle against the dark green finish.
Inside the seats and door cards are finished in two-tone green and the seats have head rests. The original radio is in place and the car has a more modern CD stereo unit mounted in the glove box. Aftermarket temperature and vacuum gauges are mounted under the dash. The original green rubber mats are in place on the front and rear floors – the fronts need replacing.
The wagon area is finished in faux wood paneling and has tasteful metal white venetian blinds fitted to the side windows. The rear window has its original glass and winds down effortlessly.
As with many of these cars, the original column transmission has been replaced with Holden three speed manual on the floor. The engine has been swapped at some point for an original Holden 179ci six cylinder “red motor” with High Performance block which is in fantastic condition with good power and acceleration.
With a front disc brake conversion, the car also sports chrome rims with GMH hubcaps nicely set off with white letter BF Goodrich tyres.
The car has been in South Australia for the last five years, previously owned in Victoria. It has been well looked after and regularly maintained.
A very tidy package that is fun to drive and turns heads wherever she goes.
