The 1958 Chrysler Saratoga 4-door was part of Chrysler’s dramatic late-1950s “Forward Look” era, a period when American cars became lower, longer, wider and far more flamboyant. Only 4,500 of these hard tops were produced in 1958.

The Saratoga was aimed at buyers who wanted prestige, V8 power and luxury.  It offered striking full-size luxury, powered by a 5.8L Spitfire Polyspherical V8 engine.  The “Poly” was a unique combustion chamber design developed by Chrysler as a cheaper, lighter and less complex alternative to their “Hemi” engine.

The 4-door Saratoga combined family-car usefulness with genuine visual drama. The long 3.2 metre wheelbase, sweeping side trim, quad headlamps, huge grille and towering tailfins gave car a bold, futuristic presence.  Chrysler advertising leaned heavily into this idea, presenting the car as luxurious and powerful, with features such as Torsion-Aire Ride, push-button TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a strong V8 engine helping it feel more advanced than many rivals of the day.

In 1958 post-war American prosperity had made big, well-equipped cars highly desirable. Buyers expected powerful engine with smooth performance, power steering, power brakes and abundance of room for passengers. The Saratoga answered that demand.

Today, the Saratoga is appreciated not just as a big American sedan, but as a striking example of an era when even practical family cars were built with real flair.  It represents the moment when Chrysler fused comfort, innovation and jet-age styling into one unmistakably late-1950s automobile.

THE CAR

This car offers 1950’s American luxury and style with an immaculate interior and supreme driveability.

Presented beautifully in Raven Black with White roof and flanks, this Chrysler Saratoga’s older restoration shines and is one not to be missed.

It is equipped with a 354ci (5.8L) V8 engine producing 310hp, 4-barrell Carter carburettor, a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic (push button) transmission, Constant-Control power steering and power drum brakes.  Chrysler's Torsion-Aire suspension system is also fitted which gives this large vehicle flat, sports-car-like handling around the corners and a smooth cruising ride on the highway.

Features include its original factory radio with rear speakers, factory dual exhaust, a powered front bench seat and functional retro fitted air conditioning.

This beauty is believed to be an original-miles vehicle with the odometer sitting at only 14,050.

Supporting evidence come from the door service stickers: a Texaco service sticker dated 12 November 1973 with 3,850 miles and a second service sticker from Tom Price Chrysler-Plymouth Spokane, Washington dated 24 September 1976 with 8,854 miles. In addition, there is on-line footage from the 2019 AACA Fall Meet in Hershey that the same car (owned by a “Little Old Lady”) had only 11,000 miles on the clock at that time.

In 2019 it was treated to a mechanical and cosmetic restoration with a completely new braking system, new fuel system including tank, fuel lines and rebuilt carburettor. In addition, new radiator hoses were fitted as were the belts, the ignition system, new tyres, carpet and the front seat was upholstered in new-old-stock material. The windshield was also replaced.
