THE STORY

Introduced in 1969 for the 1970 model year, the Datsun Fairlady Z (also known as the Datsun 240Z in international markets) quickly made its mark as one of the most compelling Japanese sports cars of the era. Designed to offer a blend of performance, style, and accessibility, the Fairlady Z captured the hearts of driving enthusiasts worldwide.

Since inception, Nissan has produced 7 generations of “Z” cars. In 1974 the 260Z was released with a 2.6L inline-six engine (154 HP) mated to a four-speed manual transmission. A 2+2 model was also produced which increased the wheelbase by 30 cm.

In 1975, engine size was increased to 2.8L and power increased to 170 HP and a 5-speed manual was introduced.

Combined with its lightweight body, it provided a perfect balance of power and precision, making it a fan favourite. The car’s rear-wheel-drive layout and well-tuned suspension ensured a dynamic and responsive driving experience on both twisty mountain roads and open highways.

The Datsun Fairlady Z stood as a testament to Japan's growing automotive prowess - blending cutting-edge engineering with undeniable style. It not only solidified Datsun's reputation for crafting world-class sports cars but also set the stage for the future of the Z-series, which continues to inspire enthusiasts today.

THE CAR

Imported into Australia from Japan, this example of a 1976 Datsun Fairlady Z (260Z) 2+2 was purchased by the current owner in 2016. The car was made Australian compliant using Tonkin Engineering in Adelaide, SA.

Presenting in Dark Purple with Black leather interior, the car stands out thanks to its sleek two-door coupe body with a distinctive long hood and short rear, creating an unmistakable sporty silhouette.

A significant amount of work has been carried out on the vehicle under current ownership.

A new, fully rebuilt L28 2.8L (170ci) inline-six engine with triple Weber carburettors was installed in 2016 and the carburettors were professionally tuned. A new 5-speed manual transmission was installed at the same time.

Other work includes brake repairs, clutch work, a new battery tray, new lower-strut ball joints, a replacement speedo cable, new exhaust resonator and wiring and electrical work.

The car is equipped with power windows, a working clock and a replacement Momo steering wheel. The car retains its original working remote bonnet-mounted side mirrors which are independently operated by a switch under the dash.

A sporty little coupe with grunt and style. Currently registered in SA on historic registration.
