1967 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

THE STORY

The 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix epitomised bold design and muscle car performance in an era where style and power ruled the road. Rocking a 6.5L (400ci) V8 engine paired with a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, the Grand Prix delivered a blend of brute strength and effortless cruising that made it the go-to for anyone looking to experience a classic American road warrior.

Inside, the Grand Prix featured a plush, upscale interior with wood trim accents and a range of luxury features that elevated it above typical muscle cars of the time.

For 1967, Pontiac introduced a subtle yet impactful restyling, incorporating a new hidden headlight grille design, redesigned rear end and a more aggressive stance. The model's sleek and sporty appearance was complemented by its luxurious appointments - offering an unmatched combination of style, performance and comfort.

The convertible body-style was new for this model year as well, but the option wasn’t continued past 1967.

With its powerful engine, refined styling and undeniable road presence, the 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix remains a timeless symbol of American automotive excellence.

THE CAR

Finished in glorious Sunburst Gold (GM) with Black vinyl trim, this 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix was previously owned by a Californian University professor in the USA, and an Australian-based Pontiac nut who imported it here.

The original V8 is long gone and has been replaced by a very powerful 1966 Pontiac “Super Duty” 6.9L (421ci) V8 (casting number 9778791). The engine was rebuilt at Rhemac Motors in Gawler, SA roughly 8 years ago and fitted with later model rocker covers. The 421ci Pontiac engine was officially rated by GM at 405 horsepower, but a MotorTrend road test found the engine’s output to be more around 460 horsepower. These engines were used to dominate the NASCAR circuit in 1962, and this Grand Prix has enormous and effortless power – it propels the large cruiser with ease and surprising speed.

This car also has a 3-speed automatic transmission with stall converter, effortless power steering, good brakes and a heavy duty 4-core radiator with 2 cooling fans.

The powered white convertible top is only 4 years old but presents as brand new and comes with a matching white parade boot.

The car retains its original and optional 8-lug Pontiac integrated wheels with finned aluminum brake drums ensuring fantastic stopping power that was unrivaled at the time by any other full-sized car. It also benefits from Pontiac’s “Wide Track” handling system which translates to surprisingly good handling that allows the driver to throw this car into corners with no fear.

The original air-conditioner is in place however it needs re-gassing. Other features include the original 8-track tape player, radio, twin ariels and vacuum controlled hidden headlights.

Recent work undertaken the vehicle includes ball joints, shock absorbers, transmission vacuum work and tyres that are less than 2 years old.

Rare in Australia, especially given that 1967 was the only model year to offer a convertible, this car turns heads wherever it goes and is a fantastic American cruiser.
